This is Mazda's second win in the last ten years with the MX-5 taking the other win in 2005. The CX-5 won over cars like the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 and the BMW 3-Series.
Sixty journalists and automotive experts get 25 votes to use, with their top choice getting 10 points and the remaining four options getting the rest. For a car to be eligible to the vote it had to have 500 units sold from November 1, 2011 to October 31, 2012.
The Subaru BRZ earned the Special Award because it made "an exceptional impact", and the BMW 3-Series won the Import Car of the Year Award.
